Have you got the EDGE?
This new program is designed to help international tertiary students who are currently studying in Melbourne.
The program was developed by 3 Pebbles. It is designed to enhance students’ leadership skills and assist them in career management.
The acronym EDGE – identifies the four planned stages of the Leaders’ Program – Experience, Develop, Generate and Execute.
EDGE is an initiative of the City of Melbourne.
What will the program provide?
The program explores contemporary leadership theories and addresses three key topics:
- Career Management
- Leadership and Success management
- Cross Cultural Skills and working in Asia
Career Management helps participants build a Global résumé and devise a ‘roadmap to success’ for their career advancement. This will include a personal empowerment workshop, designed to encourage participants to develop a ‘21st century mindset’ in establishing goals and preparing relevant skills checklists for résumés and cover letters. It will also provide advice on interview techniques.
Leadership and success management aims to develop participants’ potential leadership skills, exploring their understanding and capabilities. This will include contemporary leadership theories, case studies – incorporating leadership, power dynamics, soft skills – emotional intelligence, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.
Cross Cultural Skills and Working in Asia will help participants explore their cross cultural understanding and applications about working in the Asian Century. This will explore the importance of working in the Asian Century, leadership in Asian context, leadership in different sectors – Government & Business, key learnings from current leaders.
How long is the program?
It will be delivered over 6 core weeks and 3 Practical challenges through a series of seminars and workshops facilitated and delivered by industry leaders.
The program provides an opportunity for participants to network with members of large industry groups and high profile leaders who will support the participants’ projects. This should enhance the various leadership programs currently organised by educational institutions.
What are the Selection Criteria?
The selection panel will be looking for applicants who have:
- shown great leadership potential in their given field
- acted as a strong advocate for international students and in other areas of community services
- provided a strong example or an inspiration for other young people.
More details on the selection criteria are addressed in Section E: Personal Statement in the application form.
When will the program be conducted?
While there is no cost for participants to attend the sessions, it is a condition that successful applicants attend 95% of the workshops.
If you are unable to attend all the sessions listed below, you will be advised not to particpate this year. This is because there are limited places available for the program. If successful, you will be asked to confirm which classes you will be able to attend.
Who can apply?
All international students attending Melbourne universities or colleges can apply for one of 20 places in the program. Staff at these institutions may also nominate students they believe could benefit from this program.

EDGE Participants testimonials
Audiences comment that our presentations generate strong engagement and facilitate deeper and more personal insights.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank 3 Pebbles and Kathy Lang in particular, for facilitating a successful City of Melbourne’s EDGE 2012 International Students Leaders’ Program. As a delegate, I felt privileged to learn so much “life skills” from Kathy, who is one of the most passionate people I know. Kathy is talented, enthusiastic, intelligent, goal-oriented, dynamic, friendly and energetic, who has continuously amazed me with her contagious positive energy, exciting projects and networks. She had taught me many tools not only to enhance my interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, but also strategies to success in life. These had also further enhanced my confidence as the recipient of the 2012 CISA International Student of the Year, and also a recipient of the International Scholars from the Podium: The Further & Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and International Olympic Committee (IOC) in UK this year. I am inspired with 3 Pebbles’ philosophy “to create rippling effects that can deeply impact the lives of people around you.” This has been my core motivation and passion to learn and to serve others. Thank you again 3 Pebbles.”

“Come along with EDGE participants during the journey is a fabulous facilitator- Kathy. She is creative, committed and extremely helpful to all participants. I am not sure what else I can say about her, if I can rate her on the scale of 5, I will definitely give Kathy the score of 5 plus.
Kathy has a strong knowledge about leadership and working in cross cultural context. During the workshops, she inspired each participant by her commitments, enthusiasm, and fun activities. Every workshop is professionally well-prepared, and every participant has a chance to talk and discuss their ideas as well as getting the feedback from Kathy. I strongly believe Kathy did an amazing job during the EDGE journey and guided 20 potential leaders to become 20 well-known leaders in the near future.”
Tuan Cuong Bui, Viet Nam, Bachelor of Civil Engineering, Swinburne University

Kathy’s ability to capture the attention of all the students in such a spontaneous way and constantly in every occasions to get the students to feel the need to be part of the learning process is unbelievable! She makes teaching and mentoring look easy!”

“Kathy seamlessly combines a keen intellect with boundless enthusiasm to create ripples in people’s lives. Kathy’s training sessions equipped me with the right tools for finding a job, marketing myself/or any organisation that I am representing, elevator pitch and networking. These sessions also enabled me to see things from a different perspective and gave me a sense of self awareness and rejuvenated my potential.
Kathy’s training sessions have truly been instrumental in changing my outlook and inspired me to stretch myself to the limits and beyond. The workshops and challenges helped me to get out of my rut and also establish a network with like-minded people. It got me focused and organized, and has greatly helped me to clarify my own professional goals and direction. My focus, enthusiasm and confidence are at an all-time high!

“Kathy understands exactly what situations we are undertaking. She customised the program with the skills that international students lack and they are those that employees are looking for. The skills I learnt in the EDGE program have become the magical key to unlocking my career potential.”
Estela Leong, Macau, Bachelor of Commerce, The University of Melbourne
“It was a great privilege to be one of the EDGE program participants and a greater pleasure to have Kathy as my mentor. The skills and exposures provided through the EDGE program were tremendous and I have gradually built up the confidence to market myself in a variety of occasions. It is not just the corporate insights that I have gained, but also how to embrace life with passion. What I have learned is that being passionate and positive about oneself is the key to delivering an outstanding presentation. Ranking top four of the two hundred applicants in a foreign exchange firm’s interview was a reward for the improvements I have made during the EDGE training period. Using the networking skill Kathy taught me, I was able to get myself a place in the final interview with one of the largest life insurance companies in the world. Currently working as casual tutor and research assistant in the University of Melbourne, I have passed on what I have learned and my students are inspired by my passion and experience. It is an honour to present myself here and the journey with Kathy and other EDGE participants is amazing.”
Yubo Zhai, The University of Melbourne
“Kathy Lang is one of a kind. I met Happy Kathy Lang as a fellow participant in the Asialink Leaders Program in 2010. She immediately struck me as a highly intelligent, big-ideas sort of a person and I was drawn to her charisma, her incredibly calm persona and always seeing the positive.
We worked together on the City of Melbourne EDGE 2012 International Student Leaders’ Program and had the opportunity to mentor and coach 20 outstanding international student leaders. Kathy exudes a charm and energy that are evident in her all her work. I am convinced that she never sleeps as she is constantly creating new, exciting projects and networks.
Not only is she brilliant professionally, she is also highly original, passionate and fascinating, as a colleague and as a friend.”
